What is medical indemnity insurance ?

In Australia, all registered medical practitioners must ensure all aspects of their medical practice are covered by professional indemnity insurance (PII) that complies with the Medical Board’s registration standard for professional indemnity insurance.

Professional indemnity insurance arrangements means arrangements that secure, for the practitioner, insurance against civil liability incurred by, or loss arising from, a claim that is made as a result of a negligent act, error or omission in the conduct of the practitioner.

You have the option of using an insurance broker, like Experien General Insurance Services, to obtain this insurance, or you can contact the insurer directly to obtain the cover.

Medical indemnity insurers in Australia include:

  1. Avant
  2. Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (distributed by Tego Insurance)
  3. Guild Insurance Limited
  4. MDA National
  5. Medical Indemnity Protection Society Limited (MIPS)
  6. Medical Insurance Group (MIGA)

Experien General Insurance services can advise you on the policy differences across these insurers and can obtain quotes from 3 of the insurers for you.  Contact us here for a complimentary consultation.
